Below is an order for Compline a bit more fleshed out than in the Book of Common Prayer. One of many options.
The Order for Compline
The Preparation
The holy and merciful One X
grant us a peaceful night and a perfect end.
Amen.
Our help is in the Name of the Most Holy One;
Who is creating the
heavens and the earth.
Individual
Confession of Sin
Silence for
reflection and examination of conscience is observed.
Most
loving God,
whose mercy and compassion are beyond our
understanding,
I confess that I have sinned against you
and those around me
in thought, word and deed
and by what I
have left undone.
In
your tenderness, have mercy on me and forgive my sins,
grant me time for the amendment of life,
and the grace and comfort of the Holy
Spirit;
thrgh Christ our Lord. Amen.
O
Lord and Master of our lives, take from us the spirit of apathy, vain
curiosity, lust for power, and idle talk.
But give us a spirit of humility, patience and love. Grant us to see our own faults and not to
judge our neighbor, for you are blesséd to the ages of ages.
Amen.
The
Absolution
As
Jesus forgave the woman taken in adultery, and Peter, who betrayed him, so too
God loves us and has forgiven + our sins, grants time for the amendment of
life, and the grace and comfort of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
The Invitatory and Psalter
O God, make speed to save us.
Make haste to help
us, O Most High.
Glory to the Source
of All,
the Word made Flesh,
and
the Giver of Life;
As it was in the beginning is now, and will be for ever.
Amen.
Except in Lent: Alleluia!
Sunday: Psalm 42
Quemadmodum
1 As the deer
longs for the water brooks, *
so longs my soul for you, O God.
2 My soul is
athirst for you, O God,
athirst for you, the living God;*
when shall I come to appear before
your presence?
3 My tears have
been my food day and night, *
while all day long they say to me,
“Where now is your God?”
4 I pour out my
soul when I think on these things: *
how I went with the multitude
and led them into your house,
5 With the
voice of praise and thanksgiving, *
among those who keep holy day.
6 Why are you
so full of heaviness, O my soul? *
and why are you so disquieted within
me?
7 Put your
trust in God; *
for I will yet give thanks
to
the One who is the help of my countenance,
and my God.
8 My soul is
heavy within me; *
therefore I will remember you from the
land of Jordan,
and
from the peak of Mizar
among the heights of Hermon.
9 One deep
calls to another in the noise of your waterfalls; *
all your rapids and floods have gone
over me.
10 You command
your compassion in the daytime; *
in the night season your song is with
me,
a
prayer to the God of my life.
11 I will say to
the God of my strength,
“Why have
you forgotten me? *
and why do I go so heavily
while the
enemy oppresses me?”
12 While my bones
are being broken, *
my enemies mock me to my face;
13 All day long
they mock me *
and say to me, “Where now is your
God?”
14 Why are you so
full of heaviness, O my soul? *
and why are you so disquieted within
me?
15 Put your trust
in God; *
for I will yet give thanks
to
the One who is the help of my countenance,
and my God.

Monday: Psalm 30 Exaltabo te, Domine
1 O God, my Redeemer, I will exalt you,
because you
have lifted me up*
and have not let my enemies triumph
over me.
2 I cried out to you, *
and you restored me to health.
3 You brought me up from the dead; *
you restored my life as I was going
down to the grave.
4 Sing to God, you loyal servants; *
give thanks for the remembrance of
God’s holiness,
5 Whose wrath is but an illusion, *
but whose lavish favor endures for
eternity.
6 Weeping may spend the night, *
but joy comes in the morning.
7 While I felt secure, I said, “I shall never be
disturbed. *
You, with your favor,
made me as
strong as the mountains.”
8 Then you hid your face, *
and I was filled with fear.
9 I cried to you; *
I pleaded with you, saying,
10 “What profit is there in my blood, if I go down
to the Pit? *
will the dust praise you or declare
your faithfulness?
11 Hear me, O God, and have mercy upon me; *
be my helper.”
12 You have turned my wailing into dancing; *
you have put off my sack cloth and
clothed me with joy.
13 Therefore my heart sings to you without
ceasing; *
I will give you thanks for eve

Tuesday: Psalm 31 In te, Domine, speravi
1 In you, O God,
have I taken refuge;
let me never be put to shame;*
deliver
me in your righteousness.
2 Incline your
ear to me; *
make haste to deliver me.
3 Be my strong
rock, a castle to keep me safe,
for
you are my crag and my stronghold; *
for the sake of your Name, lead me
and guide me.
4 Take me out
of the net that they have secretly set for me, *
for you are my tower of strength.
5 Into your
hands I commend my spirit, *
for you have redeemed me, O loving
God of truth.
6 I hate those
who cling to worthless idols, *
and I put my trust in you alone.
7 I will
rejoice and be glad because of your mercy; *
for you have seen my affliction; you
know my despair.
8 You have not
shut me up
in the power of the
enemy; *
you have set my feet in an open place.
9 Have mercy on
me, O God, for I am in trouble; *
my eyes are consumed with sorrow,
and
also my throat and my belly.
10 For my life is
wasted with grief, and my years with sighing;*
my strength fails me because of
affliction,
and
my bones are consumed.
11 I have become a
reproach to all my enemies
and even to
my neighbors, *
a
dismay to those of my acquaintance
who, when they see me in the street,
avoid me.
12 I am forgotten
like a one dead, out of mind; *
I am as useless as a broken pot.
13 For I have
heard the whispering of the crowd;
fear is all around; *
they put their heads together against
me;
they
plot to take my life.
14 But as for me,
I have trusted in you, O my God. *
I have said, “You are my God.
15 My times are in
your hand; *
rescue me from the hand of my
enemies,
and
from those who persecute me.
16 Make your face
to shine upon your servant, *
and in your loving kindness save me.”

Wednesday: Psalm 4 Cum invocarem
1 Answer me
when I call, O God, defender of my
cause; *
you set me free when I am hard
pressed;
have
mercy on me and hear my prayer.
2 You say,
“You
mortals, how long will you dishonor my glory; *
how long will you worship dumb idols
and
run after false gods?”
3 I know that
you do wonders for the faithful; *
when I call upon you, you will hear
me.
4 Tremble,
then, and do not sin; *
speak to your heart in silence upon
your bed.
5 Offer the
appointed sacrifices *
and put your trust in your God.
6 Many are
saying, “Oh, let us see better times!” *
Lift up the light of your countenance
upon us,
O my God.
7 You have put
gladness in my heart, *
more than when grain and wine and oil
increase.
8 I lie down in
peace; at once I fall asleep; *
for
only you make me dwell in safety.

Thursday: Psalm 16 Conserva me,
Domine
1 Protect
me, O God, for I take refuge in you; *
I say again to you, “You are the one
who governs me,
my
good above all other.”
2 All
my delight is upon the godly that are in the land, *
upon those who are noble among the
people.
3 But
those who run after other gods *
shall have their troubles multiplied.
4 I
refuse to offer their libations of blood, *
or take the names of their gods upon
my lips.
5 You,
O God, are my portion and my cup; *
it is you who uphold my lot.
6 My
boundaries enclose a pleasant land; *
indeed, I have a goodly heritage.
7 I
will bless you, for you give me counsel; *
my heart teaches me, night after
night.
8 I
have set you, O God, always before me; *
because you are at my right hand I
shall not fall.
9 My
heart, therefore, is glad, and my spirit rejoices; *
my body also shall rest in hope.
10 For
you will not abandon me to the grave, *
nor let your holy one see the Pit.
11 You
will show me the path of life; *
in your presence there is fullness of
joy,
and in your right hand are pleasures
for evermore.

Friday: Psalm 6 Domine,
ne in furore
1 Have
pity on me for I am weak; *
heal me, for my bones are racked.
2 My
spirit shakes with terror; *
how long, O God, how long must I
endure?
3 Turn,
O God, and deliver me; *
save me for your mercy’s sake.
4 For
in death no one remembers you; *
and who will give you thanks in the
grave?
5 I
grow weary because of my groaning; *
each night I drench my bed; my couch
with tears.
6 My
eyes are wasted with grief *
and worn away because of all my
enemies.
7 Depart
from me, all you workers of evil, *
for the Merciful has heard the sound
of my weeping.
8 God
has heard my supplication; *
and accepts my prayer.
9 All
my enemies shall be confounded and quake
with fear; *
they shall turn back and suddenly be
put to shame.

Saturday: Psalm 91 Qui
habitat
1 Those
who dwell in your shelter, O Most High, *
abide under the shadow of the
Almighty.
2 They
shall say to you, O God,
“You are my
refuge and my stronghold,*
my God in whom I put my trust.”
3 Who
shall deliver you from the snare of the hunter *
and from the deadly pestilence?
4 You,
O Most High, shall cover me with your pinions,
and I shall
find refuge under your wings; *
your faithfulness shall be a shield
and buckler.
5 I
shall not be afraid of any terror by night, *
nor of the arrow that flies by day;
6 Of
the plague that stalks in the darkness, *
nor of the sickness that lays waste
at mid day.
7 A
thousand shall fall at my side
and ten thousand at my right hand, *
but it shall not come near me.
8 My
eyes have only to behold *
to see the reward of the wicked.
9 Because
I have made God my refuge, *
and the Most High my habitation,
10 There
shall no evil happen to me, *
neither shall any plague come near my
dwelling.
11 For
you shall give your angels charge over me, *
to keep me in all your ways.
12 They
shall bear me in their hands, *
lest I dash my foot against a stone.
13 I
shall tread upon the lion and adder; *
and shall trample the young lion and
the serpent
under my feet.
14 Because
I am bound to you in love,
therefore
will you will deliver me; *
You will protect me, because I know
your Name.
15 I
shall call upon you, and you will answer me; *
You are present in the midst of my
trouble;
You
will rescue me and bring me to honor.
16 With
long life will you satisfy me, *
and show me your salvation.

1 Behold
now, bless the Holy One, all you God’s servants: *
you that stand by night in
the house of God.

place and bless our God; *
the One who made heaven
and earth
bless you out of Zion.
Glory to the Source of All,
